Event Details

Date: Saturday December 9th, 10:00 AM (registration starts at 9am)

Location: McFarland Park (link to Google map)

Format: Duathlon with a twist

3 segments: 1st is a running event, followed by a biking event and concluded with another running event. The biking will be on gravel, so plan accordingly.

Each participant will be provided maps coinciding with each segment. For each running segment there will be two locations marked on a map that each participant will navigate to and retrieve an item. For the biking segment of the event there will be one location to navigate to. There is no set route for either the running or the biking sections. Each participant will determine the best and fastest route to take. The maps will be posted on this site shortly in order to level the field for non-locals and for everyone to have a chance to get familiar with the area. This is for fun and a good cause, so don't be intimidated. However, if you must, donations from non-participants will NOT be turned down.

Some rules concerning gravel road safety (rules borrowed and modified from the TransIowa site):

  • Dress appropriately, it is December in Iowa. I know that could mean shorts and tank tops, but be on the safe side and wear warm clothing. Suggestions include: clothes that layer, breath and wick, wind blocking shell and/or pants, gloves and a hat that will fit under your helmet, wool socks and hand warmers to slip into shoes to keep toes warm on the bike ride. Helmets are required.
  • Check out your bike before the event so that you don't end up stuck in the middle of nowhere and people are inconvenienced to save you.
  • If possible ride in a group so that if someone does hurt themselves there are enough people to stay with the injured person while others go for help.
  • Beware of dogs on gravel roads. Most just chase and bark for 100yards or so, but if needed a squirt from a water bottle in most cases will do.
  • Crest hills on the right hand side. You may meet Bubba and his truck surfing the gravel at 70 mph down the middle of the road, so get as far over as is safe.
These rules will be mentioned again at the start of the event to ensure safety. The sponsors, organizers, and anyone having anything to do with this race are NOT responsible for your safety. This event takes place on entirely public spaces, so you are responsible for you. That said, you won't be left out for the wolves.
